This course offers a clear intro to contemporary and classical ethical theories, which is useful for becoming familiar with this topic. However, the approach adopted presents moral theories primarily as options, comparing the "pros and contras" of each. Given that ethics concerns the truth about the human good, it might be valuable to complement this approach with a deeper investigation into the very foundation of morality. Philosopers such as Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, for example, begin from an analysis of human nature and its end in order to ground the good objectively, rather than presenting moral systems merely as comparable alternatives. Likewise, some religious theories, such as the so-called “divine command theory,” are sometimes presented in a simplified way, as if morality depended on arbitrary decisions by God. In the philosophical tradition of theism, however, the good isn´t understood as something separate from God, but rather as an expression of His own perfection.
